[W]hat size battery would [I] need for a [1995] [E]vinrude 175-HP? [A narrative of the current brand of battery, its rating, and its failure to start the engine was deleted from this article.]

To learn the requirements of your engine for a starting battery, look in your owner's manual. The owner's manual will list the minimum current rating for the engine starting battery in marine cranking amperes (MCA).A good flooded cell lead-acid cranking battery for starting V6 outboard engines is the Interstate Group-24 premium battery. It is rated at 1,100-MCA. The Interstate Group-24 battery with 1,100-MCA rating sells for about $80. |

I think the manual recommends a battery with 650 CCA. |

The service manual for the c.1992 Evinrude loop-V 185-HP engine specifies a battery with a rating of 500-CCA--that's cold cranking amperes. |

Interstate Premium is all I run in all of my boats. My SeaCraft, with 1999 Johnson 175 carb, has two with a Perko isolator. Usually get two seasons out of a new one, then switch out to #2 battery position, and a new one to #1 position. $80 is getting harder and harder to find, unless you know someone.FYI, a few years ago the 175 was turning strong in the driveway but would not start. Tried everything, no good. Call veteran OMC mechanic and he tells me, "If the engine isn't turning 800 rpms. it will not start." New Interstate, and off to the river in less than an hour. Now I never go to the ramp without running in the drive. BTW, almost six years out of a factory Harley battery. Last year, Dumb and Loyal has to have an Interstate! $96 for that thing (including a nice discount). Live and learn. Remember 800 revs.. zotcha. |
