I was hoping to get some expert input regarding a repair decision that needs to be made on my 15' Dauntless. Over the years the power tilt trim on the 2000 50HP Johnson has been acting up and last year it finally failed completely due to it seems interior corrosion. Long story short the unit is shot and I have been pricing out new assemblies and am finding a new assembly is over $1,000 and used units found on ebay are over $500. Looking into a CMC unit for about $500 but wasn't sure if it would be best to repair the engine with a used tilt trim assembly or for the same price get a new CMC unit. Anyone have experience with the CMC tilt trim units on a boat this small, any advantages to haveing this unit. Planning on replaceing engine in a couple of years but do not have the funds as of yet so I am trying to get thru a couple of more seasons.

Any input or advise based upon past experience would be greatly appreciated.

The CMC trim units are well-liked. I just bought one on eBay for my 13' I'm going to try out. I think there are a number of performance advantages to having the CMC unit, such as increased setback from the transom. However, if you are planning on selling that motor soon, I'd think about what the motor would go for with a broken trim and CMC or with a Johnson trim.

Hope that helps

CMC is nice and gives you option in the future. The fact that it works like a jackplate is nice too. I had one on my 13' and when I was looking to repower it gave me the advantage of finding an engine cheaper w/o PTnT. I bought a slightly used 4 stroke so I sold the CMC for what I paid for it 3 years before. As far as resale...what if the OMC blows up? Then you have $1000 trim system on a worthless engine. At least with the CMC you can sell it for $300+. Even if you got a OEM PTnT for cheap, the labor is not going to be. That job sucks.

Good point guys. I tend to agree and I have been hearing great things about the CMC.

Thanks for the input.

You need the CMC PT-130. Start looking. I found mine new in box but 6 years old for $300. Sold it for $300 3 years later.

Tohsgib,

Was that an ebay/craigslist purchase or did you get that deal locallay. Great price, just quickly glancing I see prices ranging $600-$700.

Thanks

I bought mine locally and find them CL quite often. You do not want or need the gauge so that is probably jacking it up in price. The price I thought was $550 or so w/o gauge.
