I don't have much experience with boating but I do have an '86 Outrage 22 cuddy.

It's seems to be generally in pretty good shape. However, there is some water in the hull. Furthermore, one of the deck chairs became a little loose in its mounting last year. I removed the screws that held it to the deck; drilled out the screw holes a little; filled the holes with marine epoxy, and remounted the chair. It seems quite solid now.

However, it was clear to me when I drilled out the holes that the plywood in the deck was pretty wet. I've seen a variety of materials on this site about repairing hulls and decks with water in it. All of these stories seem to be about do-it-yourself projects.

I don't have anything against do-it-yourself, but I do have some issues with space and resources. So, my naive question.

Do boatyards do this kind of work? Or, do they just laugh at you when you ask about doing it? If they do do such work, what kind of price would one expect to see? For example, if I wanted to restore the main deck sheet, what would be a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance.

Chuck

Chuck, yes, most boat yards do that kind of repair work, just take a valium before you ask the price.
It aint gonna be cheap, that's a given.

Not a naive question. When you talk to the boatyard tell them you only want the plywood foundation replaced, no the entire cockpit deck. While the deck is off have them inspect the fuel tank and replace all hoses/fuel lines. Lastly, if they have experience with that vintage Whaler, ask them to "fix" the moisture entrapment problem that those hulls have so the problem doesn't come back in your lifetime. You might want to check with Whaler to see if they still sell replacement decks, in the end replacement may be cheaper than repair. Don't forget the Valium...
