Finally getting around to replacing my tilt trim (johnson 50 hp) and lower bolt finally come out with alot of lubricant and sledge hammer work and I am now trying to remove the upper pin and it does not seem to be so straight forward. The one end of the pin which is sticking out about a 1/2" is located so far up in the housing there is no way to drive it out and has a hole in it which I would assume would be for a cotter pin (there was never one in it) and the other exposed end seems to be some sort of bushing cap which seems to have interior threads. It seems that it may need some kind of puller but I not sure. Not much exposed to wrap a vise grip around and do not want to proceed in the brute force option just yet because I have a feeling I will just make things worse. Any one have any input on this before I break out the torch and penetrating oil?? Trying to use brain over brawn for once in my life. See attached pic.

If you are talking about the top of the ram with the round end, this has two bushings push in from each side, then a pin with a cotter key on one side. If the cotter key is gone you should be able to push that pin through. (release the by pass screw for the trim, raise the engine by hand and lock the bypass screw in place) Lock the engine in place, now you will have more room to work on the rod end. If you already have to bottom bolt/pin out you should be able to move the trim up and down by hand to loosen the upper bolt/pin. Spray some lubercating oil on the pin, you should be able to push it out.

Thanks Contender.

I believe you are correct. Will try some penetrating oil and try to push this out. Just assumed due to the time and environment this would be seized up.

I messed up the pic but if you cut and past this it may work

If it was seized it would not tilt as that ram needs to turn while tilting.

The unit is swinging on it's own but it seems the end of the hydraulic rod is on a bushing too and is swinging freely around this pin. Tried a block and lever to try to push out and it ain't budging. It looks like brute strength may end up being the unlikely tool of choice. What confuses me is that it seems the end of the bushing as shown in the pic has threads on the inside hole which seems to lend itself to work with some sort of puller.
