I recently got a [1985 Boston Whaler SUPER SPORT 15]. While the hull is structurally sound, it has been used hard and has more than its fair share of nicks, small gouges, and spider cracks. It has had a number of poorly performed repairs and several coats of paint applied on top of those repairs. The paint is of unknown type but looks like spray paint over spray primer. The gel coat is okay in places and thin to non existent in others. What to do? Is it possible to re-apply gel coat in these areas or just sand everything down, remove old paint, fill in holes, nicks, etc., and apply some type of marine paint? I don't have any experience with these paints or gel coat, but am a pretty good woodworker and have done a bunch of spraying of woodwork. The boat will be mostly a trailered fishing machine so it doesn't need to be pristine just functional and look okay. I'm not in search of perfection here, just function. Ideas and info would be much appreciated. thanks in advance. |

Advice on how to make repairs to a Boston Whaler Unibond hull are given in the REFERENCE section in Repairing Hull Damage the Whaler Way and INSTRUCTIONS -- HULL PATCH KITS Once the hull is repaired, the choice of a top coat is up to you. Re-applying gel coat resin will require a compressor, hoses, spray gun, and some skill and technique. I do not recommend it. Re-painting can be done in many ways and with many different paints. If a showroom-new appearance is not important, you could easily repaint the hull with a marine paint applied with a roller and brush. |
