I have a 1972 16.9' whaler. I want to repower. Amy suggestions?

I would suggest installing an outboard motor - and stop calling me Amy. |

I just picked up an Evinrude E-TEC 90-HP for my 1967 Sakonnet. I never even looked at all the rest. |

It depends on your use of the boat. That hull is typically rated to 100 HP, but will plane with as little as 35 HP, so there is a very wide range. Some folks (like me) think 60 to 70 HP is fine. My use is for up to 4 adults, little to no tubing/water skiing, and no need for high speed cruising. I have a newer 60 HP 4 stroke on my 1974 Katama; it accelerates nicely, tops out in the mid 30s, and is light, quiet, and efficient; also there is no smoke or smell. Fits my family's needs perfectly. If I wanted to pull heavy boarders, I would move to either 90 or 100 HP. |

I suggest a Mercury OptiMax 250 Pro XS. |

"OptiMax 250 Pro XS"That might make a 16 footer a sinkable legend. I do enjoy humor with morning coffee. Notwithstanding, the inherited 16.8 came with an Evinrude 88. If re-powering it would be a 75 four-stroke for quiet efficiency. Note: some insurance companies won't play if hull is very far over-powered. |

The Evinrude 90 would be the best all round outboard for this set up. You will be very pleased... |
