[A month ago] I bought a 1996 Pro-Line 240 CC with a 1996 Evinrude 225-HP outboard. I went out on the boat today. I couldn't get [the Evinrude 225-HP engine] to go over 1,500-RPM in gear without [the engine] shuting off. On idle [possibly means while in Neutral gear] sometimes I could get [the engine to] go up to 4,000 to 6,000-RPM, and it sounded rough. However when I put in gear I could only go so slow, because, if I gave [the engine] any gas [the engine] would shut off at about 1,400-RPM. The water pump was shooting water quite strongly.

I have since replaced the fuel filter, fuel separator, and spark plugs. I took [the boat] out on the water and [the engine] is still running like I described above. Thank you to anyone that can help.

I'm pulling my suggestions straight from car knowledge as I have little experience with modern outboards. It could still be a fueling [problem]. How is the health of the pump? [Speculated about fuel injectors, electronic sensors, and engine controllers that store fault codes--I do not think any of these devices are employed on this engine--jimh]

One of my small Evinrude motors, I had the throttle control horn came off while under way, (inside the harbor, thankfully), and the motor snapped right back to idle and would not go faster... except sporadically, when the now detached end of the throttle cable made incidental contact with the throttle shaft and allowed for the occasional rev.

Follow the procedure described in

Assessing Used Outboard Motors

I recently sold my 1992 Evinrude 225-HP outboard. It was running beautifully, started easily, idled smoothly, and had excellent power and acceleration. During the five years that I owned it, I had to make several minor repairs to it, and I replaced a number of electrical components. I mention this because it is very possible to get that engine running beautifully, but it may take some work.

The first area to suspect if an engine begins to stall or stutter when trying to run at speeds over 1,500-RPM is the fuel supply to the engine. I suggest you evaluate the fuel supply from the fuel tank to the oil mixing system (OMS) pump, to be certain there are no obstructions that are preventing proper fuel flow. A bad fuel tank pick-up tube or a bad check valve on the fuel tank are areas that can obstruct flow.

Also, check that the manual fuel enrichment valve has been closed. It is common that this valve can become inadvertently opened. If the fuel enrichment valve is open the engine will run poorly due to a fuel-air mixture that is too rich with fuel.

This thread is moving to REPAIRS/MODS.

I do not recommend running the engine out of gear at speeds of 6,000-RPM.

If your fuel system checks out, you may find that the timing ring is frozen, preventing the timing to advance. If the motor seems to run in neutral and craps out under load, this may be the issue.

I have seem this a couple of times, oddly OMC 225......

dlschutz Thank you for answering Where can I find that timing ring?

Rev it in neutral to 6,000-RPM or so again and you won't have to worry about what is wrong with it: you'll see it fly through the side of the block most likely.

6,000-RPM in neutral? If it wasen't broken before, it probably is now. Just a word of advise: you NEVER EVER run a two-cycle water cooled motor over 2,500-RPM in neutral, unless you want a reason (like a blown engine) for buying a new motor. I see these guys flushing their two-cycle engines at the boat ramp, reving them 3,000-RPM, and I just shake my head. Then, when the engine scatters, they say it was junk and they will never buy another of the same brand.---Sal

In a two-cycle engine there typically is a rather complex linkage system coupled to the throttle input shaft. This linkage system moves all of the carburetor throttle plates--in synchronism we hope--as well as moving the spark ignition timing coil base. Physically rotating the spark ignition coil timing base around the crankshaft is the method used to adjust ignition timing. The throttle advance moves the timer base.

The last thing you want to do with your 1996 Evinrude V6 225-HP engine is to run it at 6,000-RPM when in neutral.

The second to last thing you want to do to your 1996 Evinrude V6 225-HP engine is to start poking around the complex throttle linkage without the OEM service manual as a guide. There are many linkages, stops, cams, and other adjustments. You need the factory manual, its 30 to 40 step procedure, and its dozen or so beautiful drawings and illustrations before you begin trying to adjust anything involving the throttle linkage, the carburetor synchronization, or the spark timing advance.

Replace the powerpack. It has gone bad.
