I just had my stock Karavan trailer axle and hubs replaced [with] similar ones made by E-Z-Loader. This [new axle] is hot dip galvanized, so it should last. I like the oil-bath lubricated hubs that came with [the new axle], too. I remember reading about some caps falling off from oil bath systems, but my dealer says these new ones have been very dependable for him. These are metal [with] see-thru windows, not the plastic variety. I also had the bunk supports changed for hot-dip ones. My trailer now looks as new as my 2004 170 MONTAUK.

How much did the new galvanized axle and hubs cost?

The axle assembly cost about $425 and was about two labor. There were some U-bolts and brackets replaced as well. With the bunk work, the total was about $800.

Probably not a hard job if you had somewhere to moor your boat for a few hours. The rust was always a pain in my side because I could flake away large chips of the metal. This time around I will surely be more proactive about the rust.

What is the cost for a brand new Karavan trailer? It can;t be much more than $800.

But for another $800 or so, I think I would have bought a brand new aluminum trailer with torsion bar suspension and radial tires.

The cost of rebuilding trailers by buying new parts and buying labor to install them can quickly mount up to an appreciable fraction of the cost of a new trailer.

SC Joe,

I agree. I would've bought the aluminum one, but here in HI its difficult to get the one you want unless you pay an arm and a leg for shipping. So you're usually stuck with whatever the dealer has in stock. Either way, I am happy with this one. My boat only has 60hrs on it and the trailer should last another 5 years.
