Today I took the [unknown] boat out for the first time ever. [The boat] ran great and [I] was extremely happy with [the way the boat ran]. One thing I noticed was the boat does not track straight without my hands holding the wheel. [The boat] turns right fairly aggresively. [I]s there an adjustment to correct this? |

What kind of steering do you have? If you have a Teleflex type cable could just be the torque of the engine turning the boat. If the steering is hydraulic you need to adjust the trim tab on the gear case. |

I think [the steering on the 1999 OUTRAGE 17 is] a Teleflex cable. |

To correct steering pull, please see the adjustment procedure in the owner's manual for your Boston Whaler boat. If you do not have an owner's manual, you may find this electronic reproduction of the owner's manual for similar boats to be helpful: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/manual9-17/operations. html#trimTab |

It sounds like you are running the engine trimmed too far in. To correct propeller torque (causes steering pull), trim the engine up to the neutral steering position, that is effort to turn the wheel is equal in both directions. Trim tab should be set straight. The neutral steering position gives you your best mileage and performance and is a technique that works in all but the roughest water conditions. |

No, the trim tab should NOT be set straight, it should be set with its trailing edge to starboard. How much will depend on several things and to get it right you need to experiment. |

From my experience, that's old information for amateurs in these days of elevated engine heights, surfacing performance props and power trim. |
