I have a 2001 Yamaha 225 EFI on my 1987 Outrage 22 that has been suffering from a clog in a fuel injector. While I can certainly bring it in to the shop for an overhaul, I would like to become better equipped to deal with repairs like this on my own.

I have read about removing injectors, soaking them in cleaning solution, and then connecting them to an air compressor, filling a tube with cleaning solution, hooking up the injector to a power supply and blowing them out under pressure.

I have also read about running Seafoam (or similar cleaner) with some gas through the engine to help purge any impurities.

Finally, I have read about folks that simply swap out a clogged injector with a spare, and then send the injector off to a repair facility for professional cleaning.

Any thoughts on the above?

You can send out and have your injectors cleaned. I replaced all 6 injectors on a customer's boat last year with new ones from Yamaha. Ouch: Nearly $1,000. I saved the old injectors to have them cleaned and keep as replacements/spares. Contaminated (non-ethanol) fuel from a local marine fueling facility caused the problem. www.brucatosvs.com has an excellent repuation for marine injectors services. Good luck!

Chevron Techron has a good reputation as an automobile injector cleaner. I have no idea how it would work with a two stroke fuel system but it may be worth trying a few bottles given the relatively low cost compared to various other options.

There are many tasks owners can do but when it comes to injectors,I would not bother with after-market treatments.

Send them to Flagship Marine in Punta Gorda FL. They will clean them and test them to ensure they meet the OEM specifications.

I recall it costs ~$25 each (including shipping).

No muss, no fuss.

Thanks for your replies - looks like I am going to have to learn how to remove and replace injectors!
