Restoration of 1978 Boston Whaler 13' Sport.
20 hp Yamaha 4 stroke, 1 hour
New Karavan trailer

This boat spent most of its recent years on the back of a larger boat. During Hurricane Ike, it was pushed into the top of a boat shed by a storm surge. The rack it was on punctured a couple holes in the bottom, and bent up a few things up top. I got it for a good price (basically just paid for the motor), and the hull is nice and dry.

Some of the repairs:
-removed bottom paint
-fixed bottom holes using fiberglass mash and mat
-patched numerous (30+) holes topside.
-replaced rubrail with one from Jan at Twin Cities
-rewired entirely, including new bow light wire in rubrail
-new steering cable (wire rope)
-new steering wheel from eBay
-added bow mount tiller trolling motor
-mounting was a little tricky, more pictures another time

I decided on paint (roll+tip) rather than gelcoat for a number of reasons, but the next boat will be gelcoat. I keep it covered, and it has been 6 months and the hull is still nice and shiny.

Very nice work! I understand how paint was your choice of finish. It looks like the side rails didn't survive the restoration. Is restoring them in you plans? On my classic 13-foot Whaler I did without them for a short time and sorely missed them. At the least, you need a place to tie fenders.

Thanks, I have one good rail, and one that is severely bent in one section. I actually have the stanchions installed, but have yet to get the rail fixed. I think I'm going to try to find a place that does boat canvas and can bend me a new rail section... but I fear the cost.

You did a great job restoring a boat the fromer owners must have thought was totaled! How do you like the Yamaha 4 stroke 20 hp? Do you get it on a plane? Would you be able to pull a kid on a tube?

Thanks, I really like the 20 hp 4 stroke. It planes fine with two (skinny) guys, two coolers, two batteries, and a gas tank. Its not the fastest boat to get on plane, but fuel consumption is basically negligible, and once on plane it is fast and quiet. It used about two gallons in two days of fishing, hopping around to different spots.

I would guess it could pull a kid on a tube no problem, but it would probably not be a very fun tube ride with a kid plus several people in the boat waiting to ride.

What paint did you use?

That is some _seriously_ tan looking desert tan. My '85 sport 13 sport, looks almost off-white, by comparison. Looks great though. There's one used as a tender in Beaulieu Sur Mer, (French riviera), that looks as tan as like yours.
