I have taken my Whaler 19' down to a bare hull and it goes to the painter on Wednesday for a LP paint job. I know...I am violating the restoration rule of restoring the gelcoat or re-gelcoating but I dont have $10K to put into the boat and the existing gelcoat with all the cracks is way beyond wet sanding and polishing.

I want to remove the rubrail and receiver before I take my boat to the painter, but I do not intend to remove the top cap.

My current question is, how is the top cap attached to the hull?

Can I remove the rubrail and rubrail reciever and will the top cap still be attached to the hull?

I have new red rub rail and receiver and will install this after the boat is painted.

Should I have my painter fill all the holes under the rub rail receiver?

The top cap is held on with rivets and adhesive. When you remove the rubrail and receiver you will see the rivets for the cap underneath. (so yes the cap will stay on with the rubrail off) I would fill the holes before putting rubrail back on.

Here are a boat load of pictures (6 pages) of the exact boat you are restoring in various stages of deconstruction and reconstruction.

Scott,

Absolutely beautiful! What a great way to enjoy my Sunday morning coffee. You have set a high mark and given me something to aspire to.

Thanks for pointing out to me how the top cap is attached it was hard to see this in the pictures.

I didnt want to removed my rub rail and risk my top cap blowing off in the freeway as I drive to the painters on Wednesday..haha.

Sraab928...have you installed the new rub rail yet...I would love to see pics and details on the corners, stern and bow around the light.

Thanks Ray

Thanks for the compliments - I have been working on this for about 3 years now - getting close to splashing her.

The rubrail is not installed yet. The boat is being wired this/next week. The rubrail will go on when that is done. I have a few more pics of the motor mounted and console mock up I forgot to put on photobucket - I will add them now.

My rubrail and receiver are now removed. Rivets held on most of the top cap although in a few places there were screws....undoubtedly from when some old repairs had been made on the boat or the original rubrail and receiver were replaced.

sraab....your DF140 looks great....I have a DF115 ready to install on mine. Your dash looks great...I am planning my dash layout right now.

Thanks Ray - I did my layout in autocad first - that way I could play around with it - My custom switch panel is being made for the blank upper right space. When I had my layout finalized I plotted it full scale which made drilling the holes a lot less nerve wracking.

Glad to hear you didn't loose your cap...lol
