It always helps to have a pictorial guide of what my [Boston Whaler MONTAUK 17 boat] should look like or did look like when factory new. Mine has a very large molded insert forward of the center console that has teak covered side wells and a large teak covered center hatch. I have it out now to replace the support brackets. My center console appears to have had a door in the opening below the helm or possibly just a wood frame that is gone. It also has a side door on the port side that is there and needs to be refinished. I don't have a clue what the gauges should look like as both the left and right openings for switches and gauges have been changed and updated and need it again.

[Would] anyone who has a restored or near-mint 1974 Montauk 17 be kind enough to provide me with some good pictures?

Lots of good reading here but I am sure it will take a while for me to learn the navigation through the site. These pics I seek might already be here somewhere but I need some help to pin the tail on that donkey.

Thank

Gary

Thank you Jim. I never did get Brians pictures but the ones you guided me to help to a degree.

I love the rear wood platform in front of the motor splash well and wish I had that. My boat is a bit different and has an insert platform with wells forward of the center console and along side of it. Could be this was an option at the time.
I have all the hatch doors and they are in good condition but need some TLC and a bunch of oil after all these years.

I am sure I can build the rear platform and at least a trim around the CC hatch that will look nice and cover the raw glass edges. Not too sure I want a door there.

In 1974 it was the Montauk 16.

The old Boston Whaler catalogs are an excellent resource for viewing detailed photos of particular models of boats as well as all the optional parts and accessories.

The console on the 1974 Montauk is what we call the "winged console" and it was also used on the 19 and 21 Outrages of the same period.

If you look at some of the photos in this album, you can see an almost all original configuration "winged console".

On this Outrage, the original teak plywood instrument panels were upgraded to 3/8" solid teak, and a teak base was made for the engine control. Everything else is factory original.

Very nice and thanks to all. To answer questions first,

Yes Brian, I clicked on my email addy tab and it is correct.

Thanks Tom and if you know where I might view these old catalogs please let me know. I contacted BW and they replied that my boat was made in the Rockland, MA factory and is a 17 foot Montauk originally shipped to Flagship Marine, Atlantic Highlands, NJ on July 24, 1974.

Thanks LHG, Very nice looking Outrage there and it is great to see how some of my missing parts should look when done.
I am not sure I saw a winged console in the album but others refer to my insert as a fishing platform that gives me side storage boxes on either side of the CC as well as a large storage area in the center and all are covered with teak wood hatches. It takes the place of the cooler froward of the CC and raises the floor to above the molded side rails in the interior. I'll send you a pic of it out of the boat for cleaning and repairs.

Thanks John. So what am I doing wrong that mine are not highlighted in blue like yours and others?

Hope this helps, basically you change the "img" code for your photo bucket picture to "url".

Hola, Gary. I just posted this on another thread running concurrently in the GAM forum:

"Welcome to this strange and wonderful website. A good start for any new member is to ignore at least half of what I write here, since my tongue is often stuck in my cheek. A seriously good way to get into Boston Whaling is to order Tom Clark's amazing 2-CD set, "The Boston Whaler Catalog Collection, 1958-2006". These CDs are loaded with more information than you'll ever need about BWs, classic and post-classic, and they're a gas to read -- chock full of catalogs, price and option lists, great photos, and all kinds of Whaler ephemera.

For more info on the CD collection, and how to order:

Another try with new instructions.

My new boat found sprouting trees in the wire well.

Thanks John, Is it apparent that I know as much about computing as I do about BWs! Yikes.

Those catalog CDs sure do look sweet and I will pass that to the boss lady to see if she feels sorry for me while I spend all my money getting this beast ready for the water.

Good thing I am retired so I have the time to play with this but I may have to go back to work to afford it. Wife says they spelled it wrong and it should be retarded.
