I have an '84 Montauk with an original Sportsman Trailer. The frame, wheels, tires, "and roller lifting bar" are in good shape, everything else is shot. Torn between a rebuild and new. If I go new, can I get a drive on or do I need the rollers for keel support?

Drive on is fine. I bought a Rolls Axle a few years ago, and I love it. Built like a tank and mindless to launch and retrieve. They custom built it, I gave them the width (narrower than their default width) and it fits like a glove. I did have to adjust the bunks myself, despite what the local sales guy tells you Rolls Axle will not adjust it to fit your hull for you before shipping it to you. My only complaint is the suspension is very rigid, I don't think it moves at all, so I just keep the tires at 32psi and that gives it some cushion. If you drive very bumpy roads then maybe another trailer would be better, but all other aspects of this trailer are fantastic. |
