On the 1984 Outrage 25 that I recently bought, the previous owner had removed and either refinished or replaced the gunwales. I think he replaced them as I do not see any prior screw holes from the rails. In the boxes of parts he gave me along with the boat were the original side rails and some rechromed bases. I'm curious what size screws would be best to use to mount the side rail bases to the wood gunwales. Thanks for your input.

The fittings determine the proper size, but I would assume they should be #14 flat head machine screws, with washer and lock nut on the underside. |

Thanks. I had not realized that the side rails are through bolted on the wood gunwale but that does make sense. I had not measured the thickness of the wood.I think I will mark the base positions, drill the holes, and then determine the screw length I need once I have a penetration through the gunwale. |

Hey Russell. Where were you planning on mounting them? I mean how were you going to line them up on the tunnel? My 18 Outrage has the side rails, and the dealer mounted them in line with the last bow rail mount. This places the railing farther outward than I like. When I lean, I only catch the gunnel with my leg. If the rails were mounted inward, I could lean against that. Just an observation. FISHNFF, |

FISHNFF,I am not certain on the mounting side-to-side position. Pictures of LHG's 25 seems to show them mounted on the inner edge of the gunwale. I intend to study the Boston Whaler CD some and pick a location - I'm leaning towards between the center and inner edge. Thanks for your suggestion, Russell |

The "official" Boston Whaler installation drawing for Side Rails shows the inner edge of the bases 3/8" out from the outer face of the vertical gunwale edging. This drawing also shows the fore and aft dimensions for placing the rails, but this can be done to suit the owner's needs. I did not use the recommended dimensions or either of my installations. I put my rails inboard as far as possible.Go to Whalercentral.com to download and print the Whaler Side Rail installation drawing. It's under "Downloads". |
