This past spring a friend of mine and I have been working on a new pot puller. The puller can be used on his boat (a 21' aluminum hulled inboard jet- Thunderjet) and on my boat (1989 Outrage 22).

I wanted to make the puller set up as quick and easy as possible to mount and dismount from the boat. Also, I wanted to avoid more bolt holes in the hull if at all possible.

Here is the link to the bracketry that connects the puller to the boat:

The upper bracket is bolted to a flush mount rod holder adapter. It is super easy to slide into the rod holder, and to remove after the puller is removed from the boat. The flush mount rod holder has been reinforced with a solid laminated plywood block that surrounds the tube and spans about 8" of the gunnel length and almost the full gunnel depth.

The lower bracket stays on the boat. Note that no holes were drilled into the fiberglass- except to add three more screws to anchor the sump cover a little more securely.

This link is a view of the puller from within the boat:

This is an image of the boat with puller mounted at the dock:

I will be building a work bench that can slide into the flush mount rod holders of my leaning post before shrimping starts next spring.

Looks like you did a pretty good job, Using your idea I can see a couple of changes, The base could be done from underneath instead (the base could be made inverted and longer, the pole would sit in the hole and when removed there will be no flange on the floor in the way) of on top of the floor. The base pole should be larger so you could have two pieces and have the upper slide into the lower, now you have two pieces for easy storage and handling. The bottom base just needs to be tall enough to be over the gunnel, and a large flat piece of alum(like what you have in the picture) can be welded to the base pole. The alum piece would fit over the gunnel and make sure it passes over the Haas opening. Now you can use another flat plate under the haas opening with a large (1/2 inch bolt) that will tighten the two together. So now you have a base that fits in a hole, and the side will tighten down in the Haas opening. Now slide the smaller dia, top section into to the base section. If you really wanted to get fancy you could run the cord in side the alum pole, it would be out of the way and give it a clean look...No holes, no screws except the hole in the floor...good luck

Hey Doug,
Looks like you launch from Twanoh. Where are you putting your pots? We are down here near Alderbrook and there doesn't seem to be many crabs in the area.
Nice pot puller!

Contender,

I thought of the flugh base mounted under the sump cover- after I bought the base bracket. If I find that I stub my toes too many times, I may switch it for a flush mount base bracket. If not, it will probably stay the way it is.

As far as the top mount that utilizes the rod holder goes, it seems to work nicely for me, with no bolts or anything to fiddle with.

Concerning the wiring, I had planned to use my Scotty downrigger plug, which is directly under the rod holder, but it is not rated for the motor load of the puller or the conductor size. I will be changing that out with a different plug and larger wiring, so the pigtail will be a lot shorter.

Oysterman,

We did launch at Tahuya. It was a really nice day.

The day was mostly to spend time on the water with my wife, not necessarily to hit the crab fishing hard. The side benefit was to try out the puller for the first time.

Our first set was east of The Sisters, off of North Shore. We pulled a few undersize male Dungeness. Our next set was on the Tahuya flat. We had a half a dozen undersize males in both pots, but no keepers.

Although we didn't take any Dungeness home, it is encouraging to see the quantity of undersized crab on the Tahuya flat. It gives one something to look forward to.

I am looking forward to shrimping next spring. I should have all the bugs worked out of the gear by then.
