I'm away from home and access to my service manual, but the suspense is killing me, so I want to ask roughly what I'm in for with [changing the propeller shaft seal on] a 1985 Yamaha 40-HP with the precision blend oil system, mounted on my 1985 Sport 13. As I was leaving my house yesterday, until midday Monday, I noticed that a little oil was leaking out between the case and the prop and a little puddle was directly below, amounting to less than half an ounce. The oil is nice and healthy and dark, not milk-shake color.

I'm betting it's a prop shaft seal, and wondering how involved it is changing these hombres? I've done it before on my v4 Evinrude and I felt it was pretty straightforward. Just wondering if the procedure is similar here, or if I have some surprises in store for me?

I shouldn't be surprised. Almost a year ago, I took the prop off for no good reason, just had time and inclination at that moment, and there was some fishing line wrapped around the shaft and a slight weep. I soon forgot about it, because it never wept enough to actually drip on the driveway. I knew that fishing line is known to cut seals.

On older Yamaha outboard motors there is often a strong correlation between their gear case design and a Mercury gear case of similar engine power. It would not be unusual to find that there is a threaded retainer which requires a special tool to fit onto its notched surface that retains the propeller shaft seal. It would also not be unusual to find that there was some corrosion between the threaded retainer and the gear case housing, making removal of the retainer a difficult task.

When I had the propeller shaft seals replaced on my 1987 Yamaha outboard (a 70-HP model), the service technician found the retainer was impossible to unthread and remove intact. The retainer had to be cut and removed in two pieces, and a new retainer installed on re-assembly.
