I am in the process of replacing the hubs on my 24 year old trailer. The spindles have some rust on them and worn grooves on the bottom. The traier is Sea Bird brand and the frame is in great condition for its age.

Is it time to replace the entire axel?
What would cause this wear?

Hard to say with out pictures, depends how bad, but at 24 years your axle owes you nothing. If you are worried about it replace it, if you can do the work yourself its not that bad. Someone on this site even made a video on changing out his axles, do a search and watch, it was done very nicely...good luck

Replace the whole axle or have new spindles welded on. The cost of going all new is not that much more. The peace of mind was worth it.
