Hi everyone. I just bought a boat with a Yamaha 115-HP four-cycle outboard. When I shift the gear, it make a noise kec..kec..

Also, the boat sometimes runs fast, and sometime run slow even though we push the shift all the way. Somebody recommends to change the gas-water separate filter. I pour the gas from the fuel filter to a glass bottle to see if water filled up in there, but there is not water in there. My friend told me it may be a problem of the gear. But he sounds like the boat gear is similar to the motocycle gear. f it is a gear problem, how much it cost to fix the boat.

A new gear case for a 115-HP Yamaha four-cycle motor will probably cost $4,000.

Check out SEI as they now offer a replacement gearcase for all V4 Yamahas. I just happened to see their ad in the latest Boat US magazine. The ad refers to SE-405 for $795 with warranty.

It's NOT a V-4. It's a four stroke.

Your noise may be as simple as a poorly adjusted or broken shift cable.
