I am looking for a swim platform for the stern of my 1985 17' Super Sport. There is one on Ebay and it seems expensive. Has anyone had sucess or failure with a swim platform on the 17' Hull?

I do not like having extra holes in the hull below the water line, I would look for a portable ladder that fits over the side. No screws and can be take out of the boat anytime

I mounted a swim platform on the port side of my 17 with great results.
I used a Starboard platform with attached ladder with one step.
Mounted the platform 1/2 inch above the waterline.
So when the boat was at rest only one bracket was in the water.
Used the mount type that is set up for outboards.
Cost @ boat surplus store around $ 125.00
Made getting in & out of the boat VERY easy.
(I checked the angle of the platform when the boat was in the water, before drilling the final holes)
As the boat usually sits different in the water, than on the trailer.

There is really no need to drill holes below the water line when mounting swim platforms. The one bracket that is below the platform is seeing compression loads almost entirely. I attached a small, appropriately shaped block of teak to the transom for the lower bracket to attach to. I used 3M 4200 to attach the block. It has been through a lot for over 4 years now without any problems.

Buy the Windline retractable SS ladder for $99 and keep it in the console or cooler seat.

I have talked to the guy with the one on ebay. He is definately making a first quality product! I hate to drill holes in my boat and still not have what I want! I am considering the expensive option. My boat is too nice for anything else.

The *bay one has blind lower mounting screws, and I don't believe there is anything in the transom but foam at those points. If those screws pull out for some reason, there will be foam exposed to water. I emailed the company about that last year and got no reply. Expensive, too.

I presume the Ebay one is the one made by Raymond in South Carolina. I have a similar one on my Striper 15 (slightly different metal tubing to fit the 15 hull) - it is excellent and I recommend it without reservation.

Yes, it is expensive, but it is high quality and very functional.

Yes, the outer lower mount has blind mounting screws - the other 3 spots can be through-bolted. I've had no problems with mine in the about 4 years it has been on.
