I have seen a few references to installing a 14-gallon Kodiak-brand bait tank between the center console and [reversible pilot seat] on a Montauk. [Seeks a] photo of this installation.

I would be interested to see how a bait tank could be installed between the console and the reversible pilot seat on a MONTAUK. That space is where the helmsman usually stands.

Agreed Jim. Hence my inquiry for a photo. A few members have referenced this set up back in 2005 and 2006. I thought it best to strart a new thread rather then digging up an old one.

I have not owned a Montauk for many years now, but can't imagine that placing the bait tank between the console and RPS would work well. The tank would need to be too small for the mackerel (knowing where you fish, I am assuming mackerel are your live bait), and how could you operate the boat?

Your best option is a removable bait tank located somewhere in the rear cockpit or in front of the console. For a couple years, I used a home made bait tank that did not require any permanent plumbing. To fill the tank, I would drop a small bilge pump over the side, then to circulate the water the bilge pump went into the bait tank.

I don't need the home made contraption anymore, but think I still have it if you wanted to borrow it for next season to try out until you decide what your permanent solution will be.

Newt- thanks for the offer. You are the best. I went ahead and bought the 14 gal tank.(Kodiak) Plan to use it behind the rps and remove when not fishing. I think the guy who rigged it "between" the RPS and CC. did it off center. I plan to use a Rule pump over or attached to the transom with an out flow into the splash well.

I trust all is well with you my friend and hope to see you this summer. Its been a long time.

Well good luck with the Kodiak. If you use the bilge pump over the side as apposed to mounting it at the stern, that same pump can double as an aerator if/when you need to travel back up the river and don't want to kill your bait.

Things are good two rivers up the coast. Maybe I'll run into you down at Crane's or out on the ledge this year.

Here is what I did. One of my primary goals was to make it removable for when I am not fishing, I hope this helps:

I'm the guy who uses the kodiak 14 gal. tank between the cc and rps. It sets to the left side and the driver sits on it with the rps facing the rear. We keep rain gear, tackle box, pfds, dry boxes, etc. on right side of cc. Fisherman sitting on rps sits on right side opposite pilot. Boat tracks level as a result.
This setup is used when live bait trolling for kings, wahoo, etc. Tank will keep 18 pogies alive and fresh for 6+ hrs. of trolling. Hose from pump is snaked under the left rail. 2' Overflow hose hangs over left side. This setup has worked for 18 yrs. and counting.
I will post some pictures this spring.
Tight lines and safe boating soon,
Alvis
