Got a case of spring-fever yesterday and uncovered the Montauk to crank her up to blow out some winter cob-webs.

The 2002 Mercury 90 hp 2 stroke started and ran fine but when I removed the cowling to check out the motor head, I noticed the spark on the top plug going down the outside of the plug. When I removed the wire I noticed the ceramic was cracked. The plug was also loose in the block. Any idea what caused this? I installed new plugs last season and didn't notice any performance issues during the summer and fall. I've installed a lot of plugs over the years and doubt that I would have cracked it during install though I guess its possible.

Just concerned it could be a sign of another problem developing.

Most get cracked removing the cowling. Replace and enjoy and keep an eye on it.

And if you didn't on last install use a torque wrench and proper torque to tighten, will help prevent loose plugs.

Thanks - I bet that's how it happened - (strained to remove cowling while on the water and likely bumped it).

Are they Champion brand plugs? I have seen these crack in both cars and yard equipment.
