We have over 500 hrs up on our outboard. Serviced every year or every 50 hrs...all running well until 2 years ago starting having this problem of just dieing in the middle of the river. We pumped up the fuel bulb and off it went again then died pumped bulb start died then would run fine for rest of the day. then next time out nothing. This went on several times going out nothing happening just when you think problem sorted itself would do it again.
> took it in had a service thinking that would fix the problem ran fine for a few weeks then started again. Was told electrical some wire had shorted and caused a few problems - stator changed ignition control module changed was told all sorted. Took it out ran rough but didnt die.
> Next outing ran smoother but died after 5 minutes just dies....doesnt splutter nothing just dies like i turned off the engine....did the same thing pump up the bulb again off it went...had enough took it back. what was also checked when stator had been changed, fuel line and pump had been checked all earth leads checked. has anyone had this problem....or can give me something to tell them to look for.

Suggest you install a new (quicksilver) primer ball and if there is a check valve at fuel tank, remove it! Good luck and happy Whalin'... Clark...Spruce Creek Navy

What is a Mercury 150 "eft"? I have heard of the OptiMax, but never heard of an "eft" model. Could you explain what "eft" designates on the OptiMax?

I think you might just be talking about a model-year 2000 Mercury 150-HP OptiMax. If so, let me know and I will remove the references to it being an "eft."

I believe that Mercury used the term EFI to describe their more conventional two-cycle engines which used an fairly simple form of electrically operated fuel injection to replace carburetors and introduce fuel into the air stream intake. The name OptiMax was given to their engines which used the patented Orbital Combustion Process under license from Orbital in order to distinguish them from the EFI engines. Also, OptiMax engines are actually direct fuel injection, usually denoted as DFI, to distinguish from EFI as used on the older engines.

I don't recall seeing Mercury use OptiMax EFI as a designator. Does it actually say that on your engine?

oh remember another thing this was one of the first in this series, the mechanic also said that mercury did change it as it was a difficult setup or something like that. mention clarks reply to mechanic he is bypassing fuel line at present and testing it that way.

I have browsed through a 2002 Mercury outboard catalogue--the oldest one I happen to have--and I cannot find any pictures of a Mercury 200-HP engine cowling where all of the following terms are shown: EFI, OptiMax, Saltwater. There are engines identified as OptiMax and engines identified as EFI, but I do not see any identification, either in the text, on cowlings, or in specifications, where Mercury refers to one engine as being OptiMax and EFI at the same time. Also, Mercury refers to OptiMax as DFI.

I do believe that the notation "Saltwater" was used to distinguish engines which had some added corrosion protection for use in saltwater environments.

Perhaps you could check the cowling on the engine to verify that it says "OptiMax" and "EFI." I would tend to think it either says one or the other.
