This outboard (and boat) are new to me. First day with ice off the lake, so I took the opportunity to run the boat for the first time. Water temp was 37 degrees Fahrenheit. The motor had a new water pump in August last year.

Once the thermostat opened (after a few minutes) the telltale was weak and sporatic. I didn't get any alarms and the heads were cool enough to touch briefly, so I got underway. Ran for about 20 minutes, occasionally at full throttle, with nothing unusual. Telltale was still weak and sporatic when I tied up to the pier. Raising the RPMs slightly in neutral didn't improve the telltale flow. Afterward I pulled the poppit valve and it looked OK.

I expected to have much more velocity from the telltale. Would the cold water temp cause the telltale to behave this way by preventing the thermostat from opening all the way?

Also, should the temp alarm sound after a few minutes with the ignition on, motor not running? The oil injection has been disabled and it runs premix, and I get no alarms with ignition on, engine not running.

That's the way she's always run. The t-stats don't open until 147 if I remember correctly. The alarms all worked and she has new stats and temp sender too. The pee stream will be stronger at a higher rpm but it's not like some of the newer motors that have the power washer type flow. Email me when you have questions, more than happy to help.

Thanks, Craig. I posted here because I wasn't certain you ever got water this cold out east!
