Well disaster has struck ! A large oak fell onto my Outrage last night inflicting major damage to rails and glass. Anyone familiar with a source for replacement rails for a 1987 Outrage 18 ?--JB

JB--I recently discovered (and was surprised) that the stainless rails for all Boston Whaler boats are made in my small town of Elkin, North Carolina, by a company called Tampco. It would be worth a try to see if they would repair/fabricate something for you. You're only about an hour away. I don't want to get your hopes up as I assume that Tampco probably does not sell to the public but it's worth a try. All they could say is no. --Chris

Chris--Travis at Tampco responded this morning and he thinks they might be able to help, even though they did not build rails for the early Whalers. Apparently they have a custom shop in addition to their production business. Thanks again--JB

For help in locating the OEM manufacturer of components used on Boston Whaler boats, see:

Great news JB. I have wanted to stop by [Elkin, North Carolina] and check out the [TAMPCO] facility. According to the [TAMPCO] website, they are purchasing US made SS tubing and making it happen. A small town success story as they supply rails to a lot of major boat suppliers in an area hard hit by the textile jobs that headed south and overseas. Hope that they will be able to help you out.

Boston Whaler used several different vendors to build rails for their boats over the years. They also bent their own rails in-house for many years.

The original Whaler factory bending jigs are now owned by Fred Caldwell of CMI Marine (781-337-0733). He can bend rails for the classic Whalers with the original jigs.

In general, a Whaler dealer is the first place to look for replacement rails, but any good canvas/rail shop can replicate the originals if there is a pattern to go by.

The most knowledgeable Whaler dealer I know of, especially for replacement parts for the classic Whalers, is Twin CIties Marine. If you call, ask for Sue Lodel.

OK good leads - all. Next decision is whether to trust a shop with the fiberglass repairs. I'm inclined to tackle those myself after reading the reference piece on structural repair techniques. Thanks for the help !
