I know this is a stupid question, but I have always owned larger boats that had hydraulic steering. I have a 2001 Montauk - how can I tell what kind of steering I have? I doubt it is hydraulic because I do not see the screw cap on the steering wheel. What kind of annual maintenance do I need to do for the steering once I figure out what kind of steering I have? I am doing the annual today so I want to hit everything. Thanks

Ten to one you have the standard teleflex type cable steering. These units are pretty dependable, check the cable for cracks and breaks. Depending on were you live the grease tends to get hard in the steering tube, The rod needs to be removed and (I use a shotgun brush on a drill motor with degreaser) and clean out the tube and repack the grease (I like/use the Evinrude triple guard), not a big deal just a mess....PS if you really want to make more work you can also remove it from the helm end and redo/grease the cable from that end as well.

I found out the hard way that non-marine grease will harden. In my case the rod could not be completely removed from the tube without unmounting the motor, so I just flooded it with wd-40 and worked the rod a bunch and wiped out as much as I could. I actually got most everything out and it really freed things up. If you used marine grease and everything is still smooth and free then no need to remove anything.
