Is there any concern to replace the fuel tank on [a 1988 Boston Whaler] Outrage [18]? [Are there] known problems with this tank design? Do these tanks typically need to be replaced? And, anyway to check it out to see if its going to need replacing? Thank you for any input.

Joe

After 20 to 30 years of use there is nothing out of the ordinary about having to replace the fuel tanks in older classic Whalers. Especially given the poor fuel tank cavity design which holds water around the tank.

If you are concerned that the tank needs to be replaced I would recommend you first have it pressure tested. If it passes it would not be overall concerned about. Unless you have an overwhelming odor of raw fuel under your deck, or you are finding copious amounts of water in your fuel, there is no need to pressure test your older tank more than every 3-5 years.

I have a 1985 18 and I was concerned about the tank. I was able to pop off the deck plate over the pick up tube near the stern end of the tank. My pick up tube is mounted on an access plate 5 or 6 inches in diameter which allowed me to look in the tank at its lowest point where water and debris would collect. Mine had no signs of corrosion and I was able to clean out the small amount of debris with a rag. Not bad for a 25 year old tank. I hope you have the same luck with yours.
