I read a thread on CONTINUOUSWAVE that dealt with a Yamaha OX66 EFI engine bogging down, and the thread spoke about the need to replace the vapor separator tank (VST) filter. Long story short: I read, learned, and waited. Last week, engine acted up under load while powering up. Ah ha! My moment to strike! With out changing the online filters, or touch anything else on the engine, I pulled the VST tank bottom off, grabbed the little filter and scrubbed it clean with Murphy oil soap, dropped it back in, and 45 minutes later she was cruising like a charm. All done while she was sitting on the mooring.
Now the reason I post is multifold:
1. To thank the site and posters for keeping me up to date.
2. To validate for others that the "hype" is true about VST filters. (it was clogged beyond belief)
3. To let folks know that doing it on a V6 2 stroke is easy enough for a regular Joe to do.
That's it and happy boating. I had buddies that lost weeks of fishtime and buckets of dough that had the same problem. 45 minutes and 3-cents worth of soap and an old toothbrush. Can't beat the price.
