How difficult would it be to take a Temptation 2500, remove the cap and turn it into an Outrage-25-type setup?

It would take more time and far more money than it is worth. Then in the end you would have a boat that you are going to have a difficult time selling.

Save yourself the time and aggravation on all fronts and just buy a 25 Outrage. Even if you buy a beater and refurb it you will have an easier time doing that and it will cost less than converting a Temptation.

You can't do it at all. The original 25' hull transom and splashwell area of a Temptation is all hacked up by the factory to accomodate the stern seating.

I believe the Temptation 2500 this person is looking at is on Cape Cod near his home.It was a stern drive model and has top skin damage. It would need a front floor and deck because of the drop going into the cabin and would need to be converted to a outboard on a bracket or replacing the engine and sterndrive. I have no idea what to do with the back part of the hull where the cap covers the stern. The boat is only $3,000.

This could be the boat listed on Cape Cod Craigslist. Might make a good Commercial Fishing boat.

A friend of mine in Florida considered this transformation some time ago. During a visit with him, we thoroughly reviewed the process and discovered the following.

Removal of the Temptation cap is a relatively easy process. However, you are left with a couple additional problems which, depending on your expectations, may be costly.

The top side of the gunwales forward of the helm are not gel-coated

You will need to find new deck panels for the now exposed cabin area to replace the mahogany ones in the Temptation.

You will need to fashion some type of transom enclosure, perhaps similar to other Whaler Drive Outrage models

You will need a new helm station

If you are looking at a Temptation whereby the cap is already a loss, are willing to sink some cash into the project, and the price is right, it could be an interesting transformation.

Personally it depends on what type of a finished product are you looking for. If you can or know cheap labor and just want a cheap well-built 25-foot boat, go for it. If you want to make it perfect, cheaper to find a nice 25-foot OUTRAGE. Where I am I could probably make this work and look great from 10-feet away for about $6,000 total--hull only--and maybe less depending on price I pay for OEM console.

I agree with Tohsgib that you could salvage the boat into something very usable for a reasonable amount although it will be hard to sell if you got tired of it. I was wondering If the full transom has the same thickness wood so it could be cut down to 25" to fit an outboard directly to the transom instead of a costly outboard bracket ? I was also wondering how much a replacement sterndrive and engine would cost? I believe the factory engine would have been a 330 hp 454 mercruiser. I have no idea what sterndrive's go for.
This boat has been for sale on craigslist Cape Cod on and off for at least 2 years and I had thought about making a work boat out of it. I hope this person buys it and turns it into a decent fishing boat. I look forward to seeing it someday on one of my fluke fishing trips out of falmouth harbor.

On both the TEMPTATION and REVENGE boats where there is a cabin or cuddy, the molded and laminated hatch covers of an OUTRAGE are replaced with varnish wooden hatch covers. There is also a large and deep well area, which in the cuddy is the cabin deck but in an open boat is a deck locker and will need another large molded and laminated hatch cover.

Another major component that will be missing is the center console. Finding a good Boston Whaler center console, installing hydraulic steering, rigging, wiring, gauges, and so on for an outboard will be a costly and labor intensive project.

Thanks for the information. Even at $3k it does not sound like a project I want to undertake... I would rather stick with my Outrage 20 and 13' and 11'
