For years I've fought the problem of UV deterioration of black rubber such as receptacle covers for radios and chart plotters. I've tried silicon sprays and other solutions, but invariably end up after a while with plugs and covers looking and acting like charcoal by leaving black smudges on my hands and my console. So far I've been unsuccessful finding a solution by searching so must be using the wrong keywords. I know everyone fights this problem, so am sure there's a simple solution. Help.

Armorall or similar spray? Contains silicone, and additional UV inhibitors too. Do you apply it often enough?

Assuming the problem is UV, try this :

http://www.westmarine.com/

In my experience, the sun screen in this stuff is pretty good.

I agree with Warrior. 303 is the bomb.

I used Armorall for several years with varying degrees of success. I no longer use it.

Tom, can you just leave the connections covered with an old towel or something, keeps the sun off

Tom,

Just about any marine outlet will carry 303. West marine is one of many sources.
