Hey Gang of Whaler knowledge: I recently bought a 16-footer in need of complete restore. I want to build (out of mahogany) a rear area approximately three-feet [off?] the stern that wraps around the engine splash well and out to the [gunwales]. I can not find any rear deck ideas or plans anywhere. [Solicits] pictures of this type of project. Also, how many guys are recommended to [flip the boat over]? I [a] thinking [four or five guys]. I have used GOOOGLE and the search function here and learned a ton: using a router to hide new bow light; this was the deal! She will be powered by a 75hp OMC. The crazing was [awful] but the [foam] and [fiberglass are] fine. So far I have purchased a new console, sanded the inside, and applied white TUFFCOAT from Overton's. Three gallons sprayed in [were] not enough, [and am] going to buy another quart of primer and apply one-gallon more. I have the sides and transom sanded down almost to 'glass. The hardest part: the razing is so bad. I have read [of the advantages and disadvantages] of paint and gel coat and have decided on paint--probably Imron. I [am] sure I will have more [questions]. Thanks. |

I covet Binkie/RTM's rear deck. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c191/floridaboy2053/boats2/132.jpg I can't find a better picture, but you can sort of see it... I'm sure he will chime in. I'd say four guys would be sufficient, especially if you guys are firemen. I flipped my 13 by myself and am a skinny dude. |

Here is a picture of the teak rear casting deck I built for my 13 footer. It is built from 1x2 inch teak glued and thru bolted together with waterproof glue. If it would be for a 16 footer with a wider beam I would use 1x3s. It is hinged in the middle with a stainless piano hinge so the front half of the deck folds over the rear half. This was 3 years ago, and I have removed the deck becuase there is not much freeboard when standing in it, seems like I could easily fall overboard. I now use one half of this deck as an extension of the foredeck, on the same 13 footer. |
