Hi all. I'm looking at buying a classic 18 foot Outrage and have spotted a couple for sale. Both are stored in the water and have bottom paint. Both also have traditional two-cycle outboard engines. One's a 130-HP V4 Yamaha and the other is a 150-HP V6 Yamaha. How much freeboard should this boat have, assuming it's a dry hull and not soaked up a bunch of water into the foam it the hull over the years? Does anyone have rough measurements for the freeboard to the rub rail, or top of transom? I understand a lot of factors can change--tank empty v. full, weight via anchors, batteries--but both are in fairly stock trim.

One is a 1985 and one is a 1990. Are there any other considerations for either of these two vintages?

I personally would not buy any boat that has been bottom painted unless you plan on mooring it. There are too many boats out there to have to deal with bottom paint if you don't have to.

Instead of trying to find a measurement of freeboard to determine the condition of a hull, look instead at the drains in the transom. Most classic OUTRAGE series Boston Whaler boats will have an engine splash well that is not particularly deep, and the splash well will have one or two drains overboard to the sea. (The exception to this will be the older OUTRAGE 22 hulls which typically have a very deep engine splash well that goes almost to the keel.) The drains were placed in a position by the boat designer so that in most situations the drains in the transom will be just at the waterline or slightly above the waterline. If you see a classic Boston Whaler OUTRAGE series boat where the transom splash well drains are below the static water line, the boat is out of the designed trim, and you should look for the cause. Of course, the cause might be too much engine weight on the transom, but, if the outboard engine is not some hulking modern heavy-weight giant, other factors may be acting to cause the stern trim.

Model year variations with the OUTRAGE 18 generally did not affect the hull design. Most model year variations are in the boat's accessories. The center console design changed a bit over the years. The railings may have changed; newer boats may have welded railings. The amount of teak included in the standard model also changed. Teak gunwales caps were standard, but later may have become an option.

A boat made in 1985 may have rubber fuel hoses which are no rated for use with gasoline-alcohol blended fuel. However, 26-year-old rubber fuel hoses are probably ready for replacement in any case.

A 1990-model-year classic OUTRAGE 18 is probably one of the last ones made. It was about at that epoch that the newer OUTRAGE 19 II model was introduced, which has considerable changes. For more details on the OUTRAGE 19 II see

With a Johnson 150, one battery and one oil tank in the splash well and no stern seat, the water line is just about at the transom the two side thru-hull openings. The Yamaha 150 is heavier so expect the water line to be a bit higher.

I agree with Peter, the two high transom drains should be above the waterline, not below.

There is whats suppose to be and then what is. I own an 82 outrage 18 and when I walk to the back of the boat in dead flat water, it will begin to fill with water through those transom drain holes. I have a Merc 150 on mine and I just leave those plugs out all the time. My bilge also dumps out into that well. Its a fun boat. enjoy
