I've never had a trailer tire blowout yet, and I am curious whether bias ply and radial ply tires blew out any differently. Does one have more potential to do damage than the other, i.e., tread separating and damaging the fender? Thanks.

I only run bias ply tires on boat trailers with zero blowouts. --Mark

I do not see much difference in the potential to cause damage to the fender if a blowout occurs based on the tire being of a certain ply design.

I agree with Jim that a blowout is a blowout.

Tread separation is another consideration. I've never had a blowout except when associated with a tread separation on a modern tire. When the tread separates it can cause extensive damage. I've experienced the problem twice with the same vehicle and the same set of tires. They were steel belted radial Goodyear Wranglers on an F-250 Ford pickup. They were apparently from a bad batch. The truck was not drivable after the damage and the rear fenders had to be replaced each time. My insurance company was not happy.

I would partially agree with jimh and Jefecinco that most failures start with tread separation leading to a complete failure of the tire. Steel belted radials do have a lot of mass in the tread. If it partially separates, the whipping tread can do a lot of damage. I think the bill was greater than $2000 on my pickup when a load range E radial blew on a rear wheel. I can't recommend bias ply tires though. I had constant trouble with them due to really short tread life, and a lot of flat repairs that seems to be caused by defects in the tire casing.
