I have a 1996 Johnson 88SPL. Have traced source of overheat alarm @ WOT to bad temp sensor on right head. Question is, how difficult is this to replace? I see where the tan wire enters the head, and it appears to be siliconed in place? Any advice would be appreciated!!

remove the water cover on the cylinder head to access the temp switch. Be sure to remove any deposits that may restrict the flow of cooling water while you are in there. It would be best to remove the whole cylinderhead and inspect the cylinder wall cooling area, the cylinder head passages, and the rubber water deflector condition which also affect the temp at high speeds.

will do... and do I also use high-temp silicone to secure the wire back where it passes thru the water cover? It appears that is how it's in there now.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I appreciate the assistance

no silicone. The switch has a rubber boot on it that compresses when the water cover is torqued down.

When I replace the water cover gasket does it require any type of sealant (permatex, etc ), or do I just put in place and bolt the cover on?

Use the brown gasket sealer called OMC or BRP Gasket Sealer. It is the same thing that Mercury uses called Perfect Seal #4 and can also be found in some auto supply stores or industrial suppliers under the Perfect Seal name.
