Guys,

The previous owner of my 1984 Outrage 18 mounted an aluminum slide for a bimini base directly in the non-skid diamond patter gel coat. The slide is about 12” long. Along the entire length it was glued down with 5100 and it is screwed in at both ends. I removed these slides as they were dysfunctional. What is left is rather unsightly. I am considering grinding down the diamond gel coat and refinishing smooth. If I do that I will probably do all of the gel coat on the gunnels below the bow rail.

Has anyone done this? If so how does it look?

I believe there is a remover for 5200. I would use that and leave the non-skid in place. The two screw holes can be filled with an epoxy paste or you could just leave the screws in the holes screwed down fully and set in with BoatLife caulk. I would fill the holes with the screws.

Grinding away the non-skid would be unsightly, at best.

I just removed 5200 using goof off and a little elbow grease, however it was not on the non skid, I would spray the area and let it sit for a while (not in the sun) and let the goof off do its stuff....good luck

Put down 2 new sliders and call it a day. Those sliders are great.

To be clear what I am talking about doing is grinding away the non skid then repairing it to an exact match of the rest of the gel coat....I am certain I can do a good match of the rest of the gel coat with a smooth surface...just not interested in trying to replicate the diamond plate.

Why go through all that trouble?

Because with the drilled holes that are stripped and cracked and the 5100 adhered inside the diamond pattern it looks pretty bad now. I have decided that repairing the diamond pattern is too hard to match, smooth no so hard...

Seriously....no one has ever done this before?

Non-skid atop the the gunnels can be useful. I want to keep what I have.

No...easier to remove the 5200 or do something else. Stripping down the non-skid and fairing it out is a real PITA and personally a waste of time. Your boat do what you want.

I really think the goof off will work, let it soak in and use a scrub brush so it can get between the non skid...
