The motor for TRIM [on a 2004 Mercury 90-HP outboard motor] rusted thru last week and started leaking oil. [I] removed the motor assembly and called a Mercury dealer; they gave me a price of $480. An Arco-brand pump for the motor cost $150. Has anyone tried the Arco-brand pump? Had good luck? Please reply. Arco says they are made in the USA. [I] don't want to go cheap and regret, but $330 is a lot of money. I boat in saltwater.

If the Arco-brand part is a direct replacement, it sounds like it would be worth trying. The $330 difference in cost between the OEM and the Arco replacement is a significant savings. Based on the breadth and width of the replacement trim motors that Arco manufacturers, they appear to have some familiarity with replacement trim motors for outboard engines.

Jim is correct, why spend the extra coin for the same thing, I can not believe [the Mercury TRIM motor] only lasted this long. Spray the new pump with some LPS-3 before you put it back on.

Is the Acro brand pump a third party part? Does Mercury offer there version of it or is strictly a third party part that is used in Mercury engines.

Thanks,

Martyn

ARCO is a great pump, probably better than OEM.

It [is] hard to imagine anything worse than OEM if the OEM pump rusted out enough to leak oil after 6 to 7 years!

I use Arco products on repair jobs all the time. Great products, service, technology, and cost.

I would go with the [Arco-brand replacement part]. I really do believe Mercury has a problem with these [TRIM motors]. It [is] hard to prove, but I have had [Mercury TRIM motors] fail prematurely twice on different engines in the same year! The other owner had one changed out under warranty. I was told corrosion due to a bad ground a few slips down in the marina was to blame. I also heard a lack of zinc protection as well could cause it. Ahh, I don't know about that, but [TRIM motors] shouldn't go in only a few years. After reading Frazier's post I think there may be something wrong with the OEM part.

I [installed] an ARCO pump today and it works great. It was an easy job and the pump looked really nice. Plus, I saved a lot of money. Thanks for the responses.--Frazier
