I often fly fish, but find that the Norman pin on my 13-foot Whaler is the perfect device for hooking my slack fly line--especially when a fish is on. I am thinking of making some sort of device that will easily slip on to cover it while fishing. Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem? I don't want to use a stripping basket, and this older thread mentioned using a wet towel ( http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/005861.html ) but I'd prefer a different solution if possible. Thanks |

Cut a volley ball in half or buy a prop guard. |

I agree with tohsgib, has to be something round with no snags, like a ball cap or hard hat, you can use velcro to hold it in place |

Try an outdoor faucet freeze cap. |

Thanks for the ideas guys, interesting to see what people think of. I was thinking possible some sort of foam dome that I can cut and shape to fit snugly, but I'm not sure where I'd get the foam. I'm not sure if they sell the faucet guards in Louisiana. When I moved down here from Cape Cod (some might call me crazy for this), I learned the hard way that because houses are raised and without foundations, faucets must be dripped on freezing nights. |

We are also the highest in insurance/health care fraud (next state is California and they are only 1/2 of what Florida steals) We have 4 cities in the state (out of the top 25 in the nation) as the worse place to drive #1 was the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area #2 Orlando #4 or so was Jacksonville. |

Simply remove the norman pin when fly fishing. It threads together, and if a suitable anti seize compound is used, it could be easily removed and replaced as needed. |

Pile Gummy Bears on top of it. When the fishing is slow, you have something to snack on.(One more stupid idea to solve your stupid problem that is relatively easy to fix but brought to us for stupid answers.....) I didn't really mean that, but what the hey!! |

fno- that is a stupid joke. My bad for soliciting creative solutions to a problem... there is a difference between easy solutions and good solutions. |

Actually Whaler made a model called the Cross-Tackle. It was designed by Janis' husband and was for fly fishing. Unfortunately it was a flop...an expensive flop. Look for one used, mid-90's. |

Ha! Well the snagging is not a problem of skill... actually better fly fishermen who can cast farther (and thus have more slack line) will have worse problems. Thanks, I hadn't heard of this...the Cross Tackle looks ok for fly fishing, and quite cumbersome for anything else. The main problem is all the rails, the high windscreen, and vertical rod holders. These are no-nos for fly fishing. I would buy a flats boat if I could afford it. |
