I have a 1970's Montauk 17 with a broken bow eye that makes [the boat] hard to trailer. I opened the anchor locker and could not see the bolts and nuts. Do I have to remove some fiberglass inside the anchor locker to get to them? My wife purchased this boat about 10 years ago and it had been reconditioned, so the boat may not be standard. We love this boat and have had many hours of fun on it. We trailer several times yearly, so I need to fix this problem. Thanks for any help or advice.

At least on the later Montauks, the bow eye is attached to
a piece of threaded rod, the other end of which gets threaded
into the lifting eye. You disassemble by unscrewing the
lifting eye (the bow eye has a couple of bumps that mate to
a couple of indentations in the hull).

How is the bow eye held in place? They should be through-threaded. You need to get this fixed. Water will get in the hull. [The bow eye] holds your boat on the trailer, and [is used in] getting [the boat] on the trailer at the ramp.

Thanks for the responses. The bow cleat was a stainless ā€œCā€ bolt. There is nothing visible inside the hull. The place inside the hull where the nuts should be is about where the anchor locker is located. As for launching, I am using the bow rails and adjustable straps to load and secure the boat.
Works well enough for very short distances. I am going to the beach cottage this weekend and will repair somehow. I may take pictures and post them. It could possibly aid someone else with a similar problem. Thanks again for the help.

I believed that the OEM bow eye on a 17-foot Boston Whaler is a casting with a single threaded rod attached. The other end of the threaded rod passes through the hull and exits in the anchor locker, where it is capped with a lifting eye.

Your narrative description describes something different. Perhaps the bow eye was modified at some point in your boat's restoration.

On my 1996 Montauk the lifting eye is outside and above the locker. It appears to thread to the bow eye.
