The rub rail on my 1981 13 Sport appears to be original and is in need of replacement. The old style rub rail is pretty but lacks the utility of the current style. I want to install a current style rub rail to replace the old one. Is changing over to the new style possible without a major rework? If anyone knows of this having been done I would appreciate their perspective. Thank you. Butch

When saying "New Style" rub rail in my original post I am referring to the "current style" rub rail. After reading the information on rub rail replacement in the "Reference" pages I realized that some may have assumed I was referring to the new style rub rail used on classic Whalers.Butch |

A rubrail is a rubrail and they can all be used on any boat. The current 2012 style is what Whaler used to consider the "Heavy Duty" or commercial type rubrail, functional but kinda bulky and ugly on a classic in my opinion. You can buy their rubrail or buy aftermarket. I personally would go aftermarket and save about 50%. Look at Taco for instance. I had one on my 76 13' and it was very heavy duty and cheaper than the one you are replacing by quite a bunch. The only problem I might forsee is your current rubrail is a 3 piece design that covers quite a bit of your gunwale. The newer or aftermarket may not be as wide and you may see a fade line no matter how much you compound. To "lighten" up the look of the newer style or Taco rail, I perfer the black receiver with the white insert which kinda breaks it up. The Whaler one is black on black only I believe. Taco might even make a white with a black insert that would look almost OEM but more beefier. |

The choice of rub rails should be made on how hard you plan on hitting the dock....And I use stainless screws every 4 inches.... |

Thanks, guys.I don't plan to hit the dock. Never have planned to do so. But, despite my plans, I do sometimes impact the dock with a bit more force than planned. In the best interest of my 13 a heavy duty rub rail, although not elegant, is needed. Screws every four inches sounds like a good plan. I'll have a look at Taco and see what I can find. Butch |

Taco makes a wide selections of railings (good choice). I know West Marine carries all of the products. Last year West Marine had a rebate on taco rub rails (check their site on line) and Taco gave one as well. I ended paying about $50. for my rub rail for my 11 whaler. I would check on line also (ebay, Marine Liquidators Ft, Pierce Fl)...good luck |
