I am looking for a Power Pack for a 2001 Johnson 90 two-cycle outboard engine part number 765386. The engine is missing at 4,000 to 5,000-RPM, but [the engine runs] fine at low RPM. Mechanic says [the cause of the problem is] either the Power Pack or the [optical] timing [device]. [Tell me of a] good source for used parts. |

That and the OIS optical system I would NOT buy used. They have a limited life so you might get 1 hour or 10 years, not worth the gamble for a few Quid. |

By the way the part number is 765386. |

If you don't have a relationship with a local dealer, try http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_search.php?part_num=765386& x=21&y=6 Usually pretty good prices and availability. |

Kinda have to agree with Tohsgib on this one unless the parts you are looking for are like anvils, and you can not screw them up or get a bad one... |

Thanks for clarification. OMC Power Packs are not that expensive. I think an new OEM part is under $300. Used electrical components usually come with a history of malfunctions--that is why they're used. I never heard of anyone replacing a Power Pack that was operating perfectly. Most people replace their Power Pack when it starts to act up. I have a used Power Pack. It is good for an emergency spare. It drops a cylinder now and then when it gets warm. I suspect that sort of behavior will be typical for used Power Packs. |

That's exactly what's happenning with mine! Gets warm and drops a cylinder. What company has the best prices on Johnson parts? |

Ebay is a great source for outboard engine parts, new and used. Usually you can find anything you need. Do a search for "Johnson #765386" and you will find 2 new ones, for $250 each. |

G. Obama says; Mechanic says [the cause of the problem is] either the Power Pack or the [optical] timing [device]. I, would find out for sure which one it is before I would be buying parts. There should be a test your mechanic could do to isolate the bad part. |

FYI the best price I've found in the country on a new power pack was at boats.net By the way I'm not "G. Obama." My user name is Go Bama as in Roll Tide! Thanks for the replies and Merry Christmas. |

Sorry for the confusion, I think President Obama went to Harvard, not University of Alabama, However Alabama is my favorite team in the SE Conference. I love it when they beat Florida. |

Read post #2. Also look to see if Sierra makes them now, should be much cheaper than OEM. |
