I'm thinking of purchasing a '91 Outrage 19. I have been reading the numerous forums about fuel tank replacement. Does the old addage "If its not broke...don't fix it" apply here or does one need to address the issue simply because of the age of the boat? I'm on the fence about pulling the trigger on this one. For what I'm paying for '91 Whaler I could get a much newer and better condition "other brand" boat.

I believe that my 1983 Outrage 18, is essentially the same boat, and my fuel take still passes pressure tests and still performs without issue. I have replaced the fuel vent and fill lines, with ones that meet the new ratings.

Exercise caution, that 1991 may not have a separate tank cover like the Classic. This means you may have to cut a hole in the deck to remove the tank.

I have the same boat, you have a tank cover that is removable.I would pressure test it and enjoy it if all is well with the pressure test.If not you can move the console forward enough without derigging it by just removing the side bolts holding the console to the deck and slide the console forward enough to get the lid off the gas tank.

ruffinit,

If it is a 1991, 19' Outrage II it has a molded floor with the console part of the floor deck, and you may notice the small trough in the floor that completely encircles the console too in front of the front seat area to the aft part of the floor to the area where the fuel fill is, that is the part that has to cut and removed to access the 76 gallon fuel tank, if a fuel leak begins, it will be at the lowest point on the tank and that is at the aft end of the tank and it will rust from inside the tank to the outside. THAT is from the manufacture of the tank, Florida Marine Tanks, they are the ones that made the fuel tanks for Boston Whaler. That is where mine leaked, I now have a new tank.
Good luck, if it isn't leaking now it will most likely do so soon. Nature of the beast.

Rich,

Did FMT give any reason why the tank would be corroding from the inside out?

Ethanol issue here?

Regards,

Don

Thanks guys for all your help. I have decided not to purchase the boat due to an unsatisfactory water test. The motor needed too much work. Richie

dfmcintyre,

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, It was from condensation accumulation over time,
as it was explained to me, if the tank is stored with less fuel, there is more room for condensation to occur, if the tank has more fuel, less room for condensation, and with the warming and cooling of the outside temperatures, the tanks take on the condensation, they also suggested to not to let the tank "breath",so tape over the vent fitting during long storage and try to keep as much fuel as possible in the tank. Didn't seem to be ethanol. When I checked the tank when I removed it, I almost missed the tiny hole, maybe the size of a pin head, so I sectioned the tank with a sawzal and finally at the most rear portion of the tank on the bottom, I could see on the inside of the tank the corrosion, so I pushed on the small hole on the outside and the hole became over 3/8" in size !
So this is how I store the boat now, full fuel and tape over the fuel vent fitting for the winter storage, which in the desert south west is only for a couple of months, I'm in the 4th year of this procedure now and seems fine, keep the filters fresh at all times.
Hope that helps,

Rich..WaterDog
