[The author begins by telling us that he] just did a carburetor cleaning on my 1979 Johnson 85-HP outboard engine, and everything appeared fine. [The 1979 Johnson 85-HP outboard engine] starts well, runs smoothly, [and the] only problem is after motor is warmed up. I try running it at 4,500- to 4,800-RPM, [and the 1979 Johnson 85-HP outboard engine] starts sputtering as if it is not getting enough fuel. [If the throttle is] idled down, [the engine] runs smoothly. What to check? [The fuel is] fresh in the fuel tank, and the filter is new and no sign of trash or water. What do you think? Thanks in advance--Bud.

Because you say that the only time there is an onset of the problem is after the engine has warmed to operating temperature, I think the problem is probably electrical in nature. You may have some electrical or electronic component associated with the spark ignition system that begins to malfunction only after the engine has reached operating temperature. To test for proper spark ignition, use an in-line spark tester in the high-tension spark plug wire. Move the in-line spark tester from cylinder to cylinder, and carefully observe the spark-gap of the tester for indications of loss of spark. To facilitate the observation, avoid conducting the test in strong daylight conditions. Run the motor at dusk. |
