The through hull fittings in the splash well of my 22 Outrage are in pretty bad shape. While removing my main engine I noticed both the through hull fittings were badly cracked. Is there rubber backing on these fittings or are they putting moisture into my transom? Both are bad, this is the best pic I could get Can I get replacement fittings from West Marine? Thanks |

I got the old fittings out, they disintegrated upon removal. It looks to me like the old fittings are 1 1/4" diameter, is that correct? I don't see a 1 1/4 inch fitting on West Marines website but that doesnt mean much |

Also the holes are moist but not soft, so it looks like I discovered the problem in time to avoid transom issues. I guess a lightbulb on the transom for a few days ought to dry it out good, right? |

BW has changed these fittings to nylon, on the new boats. I replaced both of mine with the new style nylon parts. Had to drill the holes a bit larger, but no problems, make sure to use a good sealant. I used Boatlife Marine Sealer/ adhesive with good results. |

Teak, I replaced those on my Outrage using the Tom W. Clark method (in fact, I used Tom W. Clark himself). They are larger tubing than the floor drain tubes, 1.25", I think. McMaster Carr is the source for the material (brass tubing and O-rings). Measure the OD carefully and order 3 feet. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-brass-tubing/=gyv1py Replacement method is the same as the floor tubes but easier. I suspect that Tom had a larger flaring die for the air chisel, but that should be easy to source at McMaster as well. Here are the tools and materials you need. This thread covers most of the Clark drain tube method, which works really well. The only thing that works better is to have Tom drop by your house and show you how to do the job. And that does happen. |

replacing these are actually pretty easy if the tubes are softened by annealing. I was shocked how easy it was. |

Thanks for the replies. Since my 225 is precariously balanced from my ceiling hoist right now I need to find a local source to buy the materials. From Jim's FAQ it looks like I need .032 thick 1.25" dia brass tubing, is that correct? Also I will need a few O-rings. West Marine and a marginal BW dealer are the only boating stores around. Has anyone purchased these items from West Marine lately? |

Teak, For what it's worth, McMaster had the stuff to me in a day or two. Grainger or another industrial supplier in your area may have the stuff as well, and have counter pick up so you can get it immediately. I've never seen the larger tubing stock at West Marine. |

Since my Evinrude is balanced on a block of wood hanging from the ceiling I had McMaster overnight the tubing and o-rings so I should have it tomorrow. The price of brass has certainly gone up, 46 bucks for three feet vs $20 in 2007 |

I have to admit I impressed myself with my blacksmithing skills. Thanks to the advice here and having three feet of tubing to practice on I was pretty happy with how everything turned out. Thanks again for the help |

Were any pictures taken during the installation of the new drain tubes? |

I did not think to take any pics Jim, but I have some tube left so I can take a few and email them to you if you want some to add to your FAQ. |
