I am replacing the impeller on my 2000 Yamaha 225 OX66. I have done a few impeller replacements on different motors, but not on this paticular motor. I have dropped the lower gear case and removed the pump plastic outer housing and stainless cup covering the impeller. After removing that I found that the impeller has a metal collar above it, preventing me from just sliding the rubber impeller up and off the shaft as I have done in other outboards.

I have not seen a metal collar before and it resists prying, doesn't thread off and I am concerned about putting too much pressure on it.

Here is a pic. The screwdriver is touching this collar on top of the impeller. Has anyone seen this on a larger Yamaha OX66 and have any experience in removing the impeller? Thanks for any advice--Sterling--Onlyawhaler

If you can slide the metal collar down, you should see a rubber gasket, slide it off and the metal collar should slip right off the top(at least this worked for my old Johnson)

The metal collar comes off nice and easy. Key words, nice and easy. Take a screwdriver and put a block of wood on top of the rubber impeller. You are going to use the wood to pry little by little that metal collar up. (going from one side to the other) If you twist the screwdriver against the plastic piece under it, you WILL crack it and be out four bucks for a new sleeve.

Once you get that little collar going away from the sleeve it will slide off. Take note on how the washers under the plastic sleeve are and put them back into the same position.

The following is if you have the full with all the gaskets etc.

After you take the impeller off (and take note which way it was positioned in the housing) The next thing to do is take the key off the shaft. (if you have the full kit and are replacing the shiney metal bottom plate on the buttom of the waterpump. When all is off, take a look at the shaft dust/dirt seal. If its cracked up and worn, it might be worth to replace too.

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions, please let me know.

Tom

Thanks everyone for the help. The link to sims yamaha was helpful and Tom for the "bit by bit" in getting that color off.

The suprising thing that has stopped me cold is the Woodruff key on the shaft. I have removed these type of keys before and I am really suprised at this one especially considering this is a fresh water motor and corrision really isn't a factor.

I simply can't get it off. I have looked at sims advice, googled things, I have tapped from both angles, use a pointed awl, chilled, chiseled, swore, cursed, used penetrating oil, tapped and even taken a dremel and sliced a groove down the center to hopefully loosen it.

Suprisely stuck. I have tried vice trips, a nipper to get a direct pull and I am wearing down exposed surface to even get a grip on.

I guess I am ready to take the gear case into a machine ship for help.

Its like it is welded in there.

Any comments on this would be GREAT

Geeze,

Sterling

I have had the same problem: Key is "welded" into the drive shaft. I ended up using a drill bit and drilling a few holes into the key. Then I used a propane torch, heated up the area and was able to knock it down (out) with a cold chisel. I have also found the often you do not need to remove the key to get the bottom plate off! Just lift it up and it might clear the keyway. Good luck!

Ahh the key can be a problem. I used vice grips (locked down hard)

Otherwise, a little oil, a screwdriver and a hammer works for me. Give a few good taps between the screw and the shaft and it should start to move. These days, when I put it back together I use a little marine grease so it doesnt weld itself back in place.

Did you try PB Blaster? It breaks things loose that I would otherwise have given up on.

Thanks very much for the great comments.

The helpful hints about getting that "compression collar" off with a tiny flat blade worked. Tube Tube videos didn't even show that until a member in this threat sent the link from Sims Yamaha. Big help.

After wrestling with vice grips, etc, I tuned the driveshaft with one hand and gently pried, bit by bit, turn by turn and got it off in 10 minutes. Finesses vs brute strength won that part.

I had almost wore down the woodruff key to surface level until answers in this thread caught up with my activities.

I wound up drilling a couple of small holes in what remained of the key, slighting heating it with a propane torch and with a punch in the two holes giving better angle and leverage it finally knocked it out. Suprisingly difficult even as it started to move. Lucky I didnt' damage the shaft.

According to Sims slides, I slightly filed down the thickness of the new key so it fit well but didn't need to be hammered in and I put grease on it to help it release next time.

A quick reassembly with Sims kit and after torquing down the case bolts, it fired up and pumped perfectly.

First time impeller change out on this outboard.

Thanks for your assistance, here comes summer!
