I have 1964 16 foot hull and one of the spring loaded outboard brackets that I would like to mount on the starboard side of the transom. I know there is a wood pad glassed in for the purpose but am hesitant to start drilling.

Has anyone actually done this?

I have a 4 stroke Nissan 9.8hp short shaft that also serves as a dinghy engine and can be dual purpose. I have considered just buying a long shaft motor but would just as soon make this one work. The purpose is only for emergency use and did read a post concerning the practical aspect of driving the boat from the stern with the tiller handle. This did sound dicy at best and definitely only a get by option. A tiller extension (simply made of pvc tubing) is probably called for.

Aside from carrying that extra few gallons of unmixed fuel, I wonder what other excuses I can come up with to avoid drilling holes?

I would sell the short shaft engine and get a 6-10 hp long shaft engine then you could mount the engine directly to the starboard side of the 16' hull without a bracket. I have a long shaft 8 hp Tohatsu that I use on short shaft 13' Whaler and it works fine. The only drawback is the skiff will have 5" more draft.

What lead said- mount it directly to the transom with the long shaft.

Also the kicker engine is locked straight ahead, and you steer with the main engine.

Thanks for the input and this solution really does sound good. Now on the lookout for a reasonably priced kicker.

No more holes in that hull.
