Hiyo. I’m installing my new console in my [1969] Sakonnet. I purchased the kit from Specialty Marine and assembled it over the winter. I’m pretty happy with the results so far–especially now that it’s in the boat. While disassembling the old console I was able to keep most of the wires intact, an important step for me as I’m fairly clueless when it comes to small boat electrical. I hit a roadblock, however, with the helm: I can’t remove the wheel from the rod. I need to remove it from the panel so I can paint then set it up and fasten it to the new panel. I’ve read some threads on this, including the reference write-up on the destroyer wheel. I opted against the wheel puller because the bolts would not lineup with my setup. The gear puller was also $70. I’m at the Lube, Hammer, and Wait stage (three days now), so far no miraculous "pop off". Seeking words of wisdom and encouragement. You want a pully puller or a flywheel puller - it has hooks - and can be rented for "free" - refundable deposit - at any Advance Auto Parts store. Make sure you've removed the "half moon" woodruff key before pulling...it should pop right off. I've done this at least a dozen times now...never broken or bent a wheel yet (including the plastic white wheel from my 1968 Eastport that I just restored). Dave |

Do I see badly mismatched wood colors on that Specialty console, or am I imagining it? |

Chuck: glad to see you are giving my Dad's 1969 the face lift she so desperately needed. Please keep us posted on your progress.--Gary |
