I am in the process of restoring my first [Boston Whaler MONTAUK boat]. I have a few questions. I will give ya a quick overview of what I have done so far.

After cleaning the interior, I decided to wetsand and polish the orignal gelcoat on the exterior.

The gelcoat on the interior was in much worse shape than the outside.

I decided that I would have to sand most of it off to remove the gelcoat cracks and prepare the surface for awlgrip.

What should I put on top of the exposed glass surface to fair? There are a few tiny pin holes that I plan on filling with WEST System and microballons. Should I coat the whole deck surface with the microballon filler or just use a high build primer? Also as you can see in the pictures I did not grind off all the old gelcoat. Would it make the fairing process easier if I did grind off all of it? Thanks for your help.

in general I would recommend to save as much of the original gel coat layer as you can. I would not grind off the gel coat layer unless there was no hope of restoring it.

Jimh,

The deck was in pretty bad shape...The sides inside are not bad and will not be removed.
