I recently noticed that there is a knocking noise coming from the trim tilt tube on my Mercury 40hp 2 stroke, especially when I trim the motor up. Fluid is fine. Any suggestions?

Check the force need to cause the engine to tilt to be certain there is no binding. On a smaller motor like a 40-HP you could temporarily disconnect the tilt ram and try moving the motor by hand.

Turns out it was the steering link arm that needed tightening!

Glad you found it. I was going to suggest the "tilt tube" area. Most never grease that and they can get noisy. Great job!
