I've inherited my Dad's 1967 Johnson 6HP, model CD-24D, and I want to put it back into service to take my son fishing in the local lake (10HP max in the lake so I can't take my whaler). After a 20+ year storage, it fired right up today and ran great! Except the water pump is toast. I used a garden hose attachment that gives it enough pressure that I was getting reasonable water flow through the motor, but some black flaky bits came out the water outlet moments after it started flowing water and I suspect this was water pump bits. I believe on this model, the power head must be removed in order to disconnect the shift shaft and drop the lower unit. This is where I'm worried; the motor did see some salt water use when I was a kid, and I suspect at least some of the bolts are going to break off. Can anyone share tips for working on these older motors and getting them apart without destroying them?

soak the nuts bolts with a penetrating oil, marvel mystery oil, tap them a little with a hammer to remove (little secret tighten the nut/bolt a little before you loosen it) you might be able to get the part (water pump) from Boats.net....good luck

Contenders advise is good. Remember patience is the most important thing here. It may take a week for the oil to penetrate. Don't twist the nuts too hard and heat the area, not the nut and bolt, before you try to turn it.
Most all parts are still available from your Evinrude dealer, so try them first, but if they can't get them, call Gary's Marine in Port Richie Fl. He claims he has more parts for old OMC outboards than anyone in the country, and by looking at his wharehouse I believe him. Last spring he rebuilt the gearcase on my '61 Evinrude V4 75hp Starflite. (new driveshaft, gears and shift dog, and water pump.

Thanks guys. I have had the lower unit bolts soaking in penetrating oil for a month or so and last night I tried removing them. 3 came right out, the 4th broke off with surprisingly little effort. These old bolts are soft! My schedule is slammed lately so I'm going to give the local mechanic a 2 hour budget and see what he can do with it. I think that he must have more experience with broken bolts than I have. :)

I also have a 1967 Jhonson 6hp.
You do not need to pull the power head to replace the impeller
remove the lower unit 4 bolts 1/4 x 20 x 1 put gear shift in revise. The lower unit
will drop down use a good flat blade driver remove shift rod bolt. Also 1/4 x 20
If lower unit will not come out you may need to turn eng with pull starter rope if so pull spark plugs wires there is a roll
pin that gos threw the drive shaft it hold the lower seal in place the drive shaft will come out with the lower unit look at
the impeller housing for wear OMC make a improved kit if needed . not a bad job

The new water pump is in and it works! It's running a bit rough; can anyone give me tips on removing the carburetor? One of the mounting bolts is obscured by the pull start mechanism, and the spring has so much tension that I think it could behead a dozen men if it comes loose! Is there a safe way to remove this thing?
