Hi folks, I have read the very good thread on replacing drain tubes and decided to replace the one in me new to me 1989 17' GLS Sport. The inside was not in contact with the surface of the deck, it had been damaged and was pushed in a bit. No Problem I said. I will just bend the remaining flare and then pull it out the back of the transom. Bent it in and then tapped it back using a brass brock. Started to come out the transom, nice I thought. I got it tapped as far as I could using the brass block so I grabbed a big pair of channel locks and started twisting and pulling. It worked! The tube was coming out. It took a while and then it just stopped. I could twist it but it would not come out anymore. OK, I thought I would crush the tube and that would allow it to come out. I started to crush the tube and it stared to break. At that point I noticed there was something in the tube. It appears that there were two pieces of tubing! That is where I am at now. I thought it was one piece of tube and not two. Have anyone seen this? I will keep working to get it out and I know I will but I am concerned that I need to replace it with two pieces and have no idea of how to do that. This tube appears to have been leaking from the inside of the boat to the space where the foam is located and the foam feels like spongy clay. I think I have a major issue on my hands and having never done anyhthing like this I am at a lose as to what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I believe you will be able to replace this with a single length of tubing once you get the current tube(s) out.Your best bet, re: worry about major problems with water, is to empty the boat of gear and then weigh the boat. Then go re-weigh just the trailer. Subtract the trailer weight from the boat weight, and then subtract the motor weight and add a figure for the additional rigging aboard. If you're close on published weight, you have nothing to worry about...just seal up that tube cavity with some really good sealant when you re-install the new brass through-hull. If it helps, the through-hull tubes in my 25 were really bad when I pulled them - they literally came apart in little pieces - I had to run needle nosed pliers and a pair of surgical forceps into the hull to retrieve the pieces. Let it dry out for a few days before installing the new tube. |

Thanks Buckda, Like your handle :)I did not think to weight it. Would be a good time as all there is in the boat is the side control for the outboard, no wheel nota. Great idea! I see in the specs that it should weight 850 so I will get that done. Now to find a truck scale. It looks like someone put a tube in from the inside of the boat. There was a tube inside a tube and that is what has got me. Might be some sort of end piece as it only appears to be an inch or so left. I am going to take my time and get it out. I am not use to fiberglass, it is so easy to mess up..... Thanks! |

OK, Got it out. There is a piece of 1" tube that was inserted from the inside of the boat into a piece of 1 1/8" tubbing that was inserted in from the transom. Someone must have made a repair. When I figure out how to post pictures I will. Now I don't know if a 1" tube will work as the hole in the transom allowed a 1 1/8" tube to be inserted. Has anyone out there seen this? Anyone with a 17 ' Montauk or Sport around 1989 that has replaced the transom drain tube? Thanks,
